History
Upon learning this black mage's history, anyone could easily understand why she has become so very world weary. Though she is only twenty-four years old she has lived an epic life marked, most notably, with failure and sorrow. At this point she firmly believes that the color of her magic reflects the color of her soul.

Lulu was born on the island of Besaid. Her parents were ordinary people and, in the beginning, her childhood was happy. She grew up with Yuna, Wakka and Wakka's younger brother, Chappu. She always treated Yuna and Wakka as if they were siblings, not just friends. Lulu had always had a crush on Chappu, though she tried to hide it. Her parents, however, were lost to sin when she was only five years old. From then on she harbored a grudge against the creature. She studied black magic, knowing that summoning was not for her. A desire to be a guardian burned inside her heart. If she could not defeat SIN then she would at least assist the person who could.

After thirteen years of study, Lulu was finally ready to embark on her first, and what she hoped would be her only, pilgrimage. Her fondness for knowledge and strong magic made her a valuable asset to any team and she signed on to aid Lady Ginnem at the tender age of eighteen. She quickly became fond of the summoner and would willingly risk her life for her. Their pilgrimage was going fairly well and the young, optimistic black mage felt that the end was in sight; they would surely acquire the Final Aeon and defeat Sin once and for all. The journey was cut short in the Cavern of Stolen Fayth. While attempting to acquire the summon Yojimbo, Lady Ginnem was brutally murdered. The image burned itself into Lulu's mind and has stayed there always. It was that moment when she realized how dangerous the quest to defeat Sin was and how many lives it had, could and would claim.

With her return to Besaid Island Lulu became romantically involved with her childhood crush, Chappu. While a little more serious and less optimistic, most people identified her as more grown up than when she'd left and didn't view it as a negative. The two were very happy together and had plans to be married. One day, though, he was convinced by Luzzu to join the Crusaders. No matter how much she begged and pleaded she could not convince him to stay and she could not go with him. All she could do was pray and apparently it wasn't enough. He went into battle with an Al Bhed machina weapon instead of the typical sword of the Brotherhood. Chappu never returned.

Chappu's death caused Lulu to vow to devote herself to her magic only and never look back. She began wearing only black and created an entire persona for herself, the mage. The woman that the world had once known was gone, lost forever. She looked after Yuna and Wakka, loving them dearly but never really talking about it. To talk about loving someone was to invite evil into that person's life. Instead she became their silent older sister, watching and guiding, dispensing knowledge when it was needed.

A summoner by the name of Father Zuke passed through Besaid and Lulu, twenty years old at the time, joined his quest. She had given up on the dream of finding love and getting married; she had not forgotten her dream of destroying Sin. The path was the same as she'd remembered it and this time it seemed easier. She was more useful than before, having prior experience with the perils of the journey. Father Zuke, however, lost his courage and conviction. Upon reaching the Calm Lands he decided to end his pilgrimage. Though disappointed Lulu could understand why many summoners would give up before crossing the plains. From what she had heard things only got more dangerous from there.

She returned home yet again only to find that Yuna, as close to her as a blood sister, was preparing to leave on a pilgrimage on her own. She was unable to resist going with her. Who else, after all, would protect her? And what purpose would her life have if she was not guarding Yuna? Lulu did not like the idea of Yuna becoming a summoner but she was not about to dissuade her. She never mentioned her displeasure with the idea or her worry. To acknowledge such feelings had proven, in the past, to cause them to exist. And thus Lulu set out on her third, and hopefully most successful, pilgrimage.

This pilgrimage proved to be the most difficult for her yet. While she was a true asset to the team she found it very difficult to accept the fact that Yuna would not survive her pilgrimage. To make matters even worse they met the young man known as Tidus. It was remarkable to her how much he looked like Chappu - his face, his eyes, his stature, his build and yes, even his personality. It was a bitter pill to swallow when she realized the spitting image of her former lover was in love with her "younger sister." She came to accept this, though, and learned to forget her feelings for him. To be helpful was to be better than spiteful. To guide was better than putting him in danger via her affection. Upon reaching the Cavern of Stolen Fayth, in the attempt to acquire Yojimbo, she was forced to face the painful memory of her first pilgrimage. The unsent form of Lady Ginnem was very difficult for her to witness. She was relieved, however, when Yuna succeeded where her first summoner had failed and was never happier than when Lady Ginnem departed to rest peacefully on the Farplane. She learned many things, some that she'd never wanted to know, but was not completely crushed by the knowledge that she gained. Her faith in Yevon had never been as strong as some of her friends' and she had to be there to support them. She saw herself as the rock upon which they could all stand right through to the very end.

Along the way Lulu decided to settle down with Wakka, who had been pestering her for quite some time, and they were married six months after the completion of the journey. Though they were a very peculiar couple she assumed it was the best choice. She was not getting any younger and she was sure that Chappu would want her to continue to look after him. Lulu became pregnant and gave birth to Wakka's first born son, Vidina.

The quiet life did not fulfill the black mage in the ways that she had hoped it would. Where she thought there would be completion there was only emptiness. She grew cold, withdrawn, and more scathing than usual towards Wakka. She took care of the child though there never appeared to be the type of loving bond that Wakka had to Vidina. Instead of talking about her emotions, Lulu went back to the only comfort she knew: her magic. Hours and hours she would practice, completely ignoring the outside world. That was when it struck her: she was not meant to live in the domestic sphere. She was, above all things, a mage. Thus resolved, she left. There was no argument, no discussion about her leaving. She left only a note for Wakka and Space Bandit, one of her dolls, for Vidina, deciding to cut herself out of their lives for as long as fate would allow. She assumed that Wakka knew he couldn't make her stay no matter what he did or said. He was to keep the child and not give chase. Everyone involved would be better off in the end.

Packing up her dolls, Lulu set off, searching for anyone on a quest. Her place, she realized, was not in the home but on the trail, ever wandering. What is a guardian without a summoner, after all?

"You truly are clueless. Are you sure it's just your memory that's the problem?"
"I hope you hurt them."
"He's dead, okay? Dead!"
"Wakka's...a bit lacking in the imagination department."
"If anyone has to become a fayth... I volunteer."
"You don't want to finish that sentence."
"You always said I looked grumpy, but those were the happiest days of my life."
"Need a light?"
"No matter how dark the night, morning always comes, and our journey begins anew."
"Interesting. I suppose I could add you to my list. I wish you good luck, little boy. You're going to need it."
